Urlătoarea waterfall: a short walk from Bușteni

A short walk for a few spare hours in Bușteni, or for when the tops are in cloud: a wide path on an easy gradient, red dot waymarks, and a 15-metre waterfall at the end of it.

Urlătoarea sits at 1055 m on the eastern side of the Bucegi, below the Jepi peaks, where two valleys — Comorilor and Urlătoarea Mică — join.

Getting to the start

The trail starts 2 km from Bușteni railway station, at the end of Strada Telecabinei — the same place the Jepii Mari and Jepii Mici routes begin.

Arriving by train: leave the station and turn left. Follow the blue cross and blue triangle waymarks painted on the electricity poles; they lead you to the cable car station, and from there to the trail entrance, where you switch to the red dot.

Driving: park at the cable car station. The fee was 15 lei a day when we last checked in 2020, so treat that as indicative.

The route

From the cable car station, continue up the stony road alongside the river, following the waymarks — red dot, blue triangle, blue cross. Past some bins you reach the forest edge and a cluster of signposts.

From there it is a gentle climb on the red dot all the way to the falls. The path is wide and presents no difficulties. For part of the way it shares the route with the blue triangle, which is the Jepii Mari path up to Cabana Piatra Arsă.

⚠️
Be honest about the litter. There is a trail of rubbish along the path edge most of the way, and the bins near the start are regularly knocked over by dogs and by bears. Take your own waste back down with you.

What to bring

Nothing special — walking shoes, water, a waterproof. It is the walk in the valley that needs the least planning.
