Ceahlău: Cabana Dochia and Vârful Toaca
5.2 km and 955 m from Izvorul Muntelui to Cabana Dochia in about three hours, then 45 minutes on a red stripe to the 1904 m summit. No straightforward public transport.
Ceahlău stands alone in eastern Romania, well away from the Carpathian spine, and Moldavians treat it as their holy mountain. It is also a long way from anywhere: about seven hours by road from Bucharest, which is why most visitors make a weekend of it rather than a day.
The classic plan is simple — walk up to Cabana Dochia, sleep there, and take the short route to Vârful Toaca in the morning.
5.2 km · 955 m up · 3 hours to the hut · then 45 min to the summit
- To Cabana Dochia: 5.2 km, 955 m up, 3 hours
- Waymark: Blue stripe (bandă albastră)
- Difficulty: Not high, but with steeper sections
- Dochia to Vârful Toaca: 45 minutes up; 1h30 and 3.2 km for the return, 245 m
- Toaca waymark: Red stripe (bandă roșie)
- Summit: Vârful Toaca, 1904 m
- Start: Cabana Izvorul Muntelui — parking, and a park fee

Getting there
There is no easy public-transport answer to Ceahlău. We drove from Bucharest and it took about seven hours. Park near Cabana Izvorul Muntelui, pay the national park fee, and start from there — it is the shortest way up to Dochia.

Izvorul Muntelui to Cabana Dochia
The blue stripe climbs 955 m over 5.2 km. The signposts say three hours and that is accurate — it took us exactly that at an easy pace, in winter conditions.
The route is not technically hard, but there are steeper sections, and in winter those ice up. We needed microspikes.
Cabana Dochia to Vârful Toaca
Forty-five minutes on the red stripe from the hut, or an hour and a half there and back. The final stretch has metal stairs, though in deep snow you can climb directly up beside them.
We did it in a blizzard with zero visibility, navigating by GPS for the first half. On the summit the gusts were over 100 km/h and would knock you flat. That is what a 1904 m peak can be in December. On a clear day it is a forty-five minute walk.

Staying at Dochia
The hut is the whole point: it puts the summit forty-five minutes away and lets you wait out a bad morning. Book ahead and bring cash.
